HISTORY

Native to Siberia. The SIBERIAN HUSKY was orginally bred by the CHUKCHI, a tribe of nomads, over 3000 years ago. They bred their dogs for multipurpose work: hunting, herding, and hauling.  Unusually strong and agile, this medium size dog was able to swiftly cover long distances on a minimum amount of food.  Known for its gentle nature, the CHUKCHI dog often served as a furry bed for tribal children and a play companion too.  A special relationship born out of mutual need, nurtured by mutual respect existed between this dog and its people; thriving in virtual isolation for centuries before the outside world discovered and fell in love with this wonderful animal.  The CHUKCHI people eventually domesticated reindeer and used them for hauling heavy loads; therefore, a premium was placed on speed, endurance, and agility of these dogs.  Even today, no other breed can haul a light load as fast and as far, on so little food, as the SIBERIAN HUSKY can!  Although the present day SIBERIAN HUSKY has changed since entering the USA around 1900, the breed still maintains many of the qualities that made the CHUKCHI sled dog such a prized possession.

SIZE & COLOR

The SIBERIAN HUSKY is a medium size working dog.  According to the standard for this breed, the males are 45 to 60 pounds and stand a maximum of 23 1/2 inches at the shoulder.  The females are a bit smaller, averaging 35 to 50 pounds and standing at a maximum of 22 inches at the shoulder.

COAT COLORS range from pure white to shades of gray, black, or red with additional colors such as sable and pinto.  Goto www.huskycolors.com  to find out more about coat colors.

EYE COLOR makes no difference in the quality of the dog.  Unfortunately, the popularity of this breed is usually centered on those big blue eyes.  Eye colors can be brown, blue, green, bi-eyed(one of each color), parti-eyed(one half of the eye is blue and the other half is brown). All eye colors are acceptable.  The SIBERIAN HUSKY has so much more to offer than just blue eyes.

ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?

Please stop and consider if this breed will fit into your lifestyle.  This breed is very independent and self-sufficient.  SIBERIAN HUSKIES, like most dogs, do have a prey drive.  SIBERIANS will chase birds and small furry animals, sometimes catching and killing them.  Instinct is what t makes them do this.  SIBERIANS are NOT trustworthy off-leash and no amount of training will ever make them so.  They were bred to run infront of a sled, making semi-independent decisions on their own.  SIBERIANS are a very active breed - A HIGH ENERGY DOG and need lots of exercise daily.  SIBERIANS do not like to be left alone, they are a pack animal by nature.  An unhappy SIBERIAN can be very destructive, so proper training, control, and housing is necessary.  SIBERIANS need positive training methods right from the start, so that owner and puppy/dog understand each other.
